Shaping the Future of Food

Given the scope of my experiences in food and wine, it is time to write beyond the world of wine.
Although I thought about titling this blog Foodies Anonymous, I reversed gears thinking if I want to introduce people to the Specialty Food Association, what better way to start than by introducing the vision of “Shaping the Future of Food".
I believe all of us involved in the food industry, in our own way want to be and feel part of the food movement. The desire to move food forward in a variety of positive and impactful ways while building a quality business satisfies multiple interests. There is no better way to enhance that “wants" than becoming a member and involved in the Specialty Food Association.
Why? Take a few moments and “stop and think” versus “do”. We are always “doing” and need to realize that “doing” will always be there. There are resource supports and opportunities for decisions and that can help expedite what we “do”. Taking the time to consider joining SFA is one of them.
Before reading on, full disclosure. I have been a member in the Specialty Food Association for the past 7 years and in a volunteer and leadership role for the most recent 5. That may make me biased; however, I think it does so in a valuable/credible way.
Here are just several of my primary reasons:
Business building: as a member, when you are ready to expose your product line to the specialty food market (both retail and foodservice), you have the ability to buy booth space at one or both of the major Fancy Food Shows held each year (must be a member to do so). One also may qualify to participate in Biz Builders at the shows, which are an added feature, to meet with key customers of interest for your products. Also qualify as potential FrontBurner Pitch Competition contestant.
Education: SFA is a valuable resource for ongoing education in areas important to all facets of your business. Educational sessions happen live at the shows, while also being available all year round via webinars, the Learning Center online and/or special events such as the Business Summit.
Involvement: As a member, each of us has the opportunity to volunteer and in addition to making a difference by supporting the organization, also has an opportunity to gain exposure to the inner workings of the association as well close access to other members to network with for the benefit of the industry and one’s own business.
Association: As a member SFA not only represents your interests within the industry, but also has a responsibility to listen to your needs. Being part of the bigger entity, provides each business with more clout and influence in how the industry is represented.
I’ll present more on this topic in the future, but for now, just hope this helps you start thinking about it.
